The Society is the national trade association for shoe repairers throughout
the UK and our members range from large companies to individual traders.
We promote the accreditation of skills through our involvement with
FLNTO, provide advice and information to our members, and also publish

The Footwear and Leather National Training Organisation is recognised
by the government as the national training organisation (NTO) for the
footwear, leather production and shoe repair industries. FLNTO will aim
to ensure that national, regional and local training provision to the
leather industry reflects industry needs.
All aspects of industry are invited to participate in formulating the
education and training strategies for the future, to ensure a sustained
and trained workforce.

Conservation of objects made wholly, or partly, of leather. Established
in 1978, the Leather Conservation Centre is a non-profit making organisation
with charitable status which offers a worldwide service in leather conservation.
The centre undertakes practical conservation, training, research and analysis,
consultancy work, provides information and produces a wide ranging series
of publications on all aspects of leather conservation.
Its principal activity of fee-earning practical conservation work covers
a very wide range of historical items, including decorated screens, wall-hangings,
car and carriage upholstery, harness and saddlery, costume, and archaeological
and ethnographic items.
The
LCC is included on the Register maintained by the Conservation Unit of
the Museums and Galleries Commission.

To assist and encourage the application of science and technology to the
manufacture and utilisation of leather and related products by the publication
of a monthly journal and the holding of meetings, to further the development
of scientific knowledge in the leather industry.
The SLTC also publishes a handbook which gives advice on how to conduct
basic trials and applications in most aspects of leather manufacture.
